Every so often we come across a French property that knocks us for six. This month, Vicky Leigh falls for a characterful house in Haute-Vienne, Limousin
There are some things I think I could compromise on when it comes to features in a property, but character definitely isn’t one of them. Fortunately I wouldn’t have to compromise at all here, and in fact I’d be getting even more than I bargained for.
With its creamy brickwork and eye-catching red shutters, which instantly make me feel cheerful, this pretty house in Limousin’s Haute-Vienne department offers a warm welcome before you’ve even stepped through the front door, and that all-important character continues inside with exposed beams and stripped floorboards. The open-plan living room is large enough to be a convivial entertaining space, yet at the same time cosy enough to curl up in, and if it’s space you’re looking for there’s plenty more in the adjoining barn which could be used for storage or as a workshop.
This house is all about the added extras, and in addition to the four bedrooms upstairs there are a further three in the gîte, so there’s the potential to generate an income too if you rented this out as guest accommodation.
The large swimming pool with stunning views is a welcome bonus, and then there’s the small matter of a lake and nearly four hectares of land, so not exactly your average garden either.
As I said, I’d be getting a lot for my money here, and while I know the clear blue skies aren’t actually included in the sale I’m still very much sold on this one. leggettfrance.com
