If you are sure you want to make the move, put your pos­ses­sions into stor­age in France. It doesn’t mat­ter where you end up – get ev­ery­thing across the Chan­nel first.

Rent a gîte out-of-sea­son when rates are cheap to give your­self plenty of time to find your prop­erty. This also gives you the chance to fa­mil­iarise your­self with get­ting con­nected to French util­i­ties.

Today there are plenty of English­s­peak­ing agen­cies in pop­u­lar des­ti­na­tions to help you find your prop­erty – make the most of them. This wasn’t the case when I moved in the mid-1990s.
