Summer loving

Living France - - Editor's Letter - Vicky Leigh, Deputy Editor

August is a time for holidays and while the French traditionally take the whole of the month off and depart en masse for les grandes vacances, many of us will be heading to France for ours. Holidaymakers and house-hunters alike often pass through Pas-de-Calais en route to sunnier climes without so much as a backward glance, and yet France’s northernmost department really does deserve a closer look. On page 20, Peter Stewart explores its distinctly Flemish towns, varied landscape and spectacular expanse of coastline and finds a worthy rival to the sun-drenched south.

Speaking of coastline, Charente-Maritime has plenty to offer in that department too, and so much more besides, as you’ll discover on page 44. Every day would surely feel like a holiday if you lived here. This month we meet two couples who moved to France in search of a better work-life balance and found even more than they were hoping for (p30 and p40). Both are enjoying quality time with their families while also running successful holiday accommodation businesses.

I’m also pleased to announce the launch of our new magazine app, containing 50 issues and four years’ worth of content, which is available to download now. Search for Living France in the App Store or find out more on page 10.

As I write this, the result of the EU referendum has just been announced and it has been confirmed that the UK has voted to leave the EU. We will of course continue to support France, and will endeavour to bring you the answers to your questions over the coming months in the magazine and online.
