On re­ceiv­ing the July edi­tion of Liv­ing France my eye was caught by the ar­ti­cle ‘The Ic­ing on the Cake’. It was not just be­cause of my love of French pâtis­serie, but be­cause the cake de­signer was based in Cas­tres, Tarn. This was where I spent my year abroad in 196970 as the English as­sis­tant at Ly­cée Jean Jau­rès. I was very quickly ac­cepted not only by the school com­mu­nity but also in the lo­cal church. And this was even be­fore the EEC, as it was known then.

I am de­lighted that Danielle has been able to take on the French at their own game and she clearly will make a suc­cess of her business. Af­ter my year in Cas­tres, I had to re­turn to Eng­land to con­tinue my stud­ies and did not re­turn to the beau­ti­ful Tarn dé­parte­ment un­til re­cently. Next time I go I shall have to look out for those mouth-wa­ter­ing cakes.
