Every so often we come across a French property that knocks us for six. This month, Sophie Gardner-Roberts dreams of a different life in this beautiful farmhouse in Landes
The fast and often stressful pace of life that seems to dominate the modern world frequently makes me yearn for a simpler lifestyle – a kind of ‘back-to-basics’ calling where I could spend my days outside, tending a garden, reading, writing and welcoming the occasional guest. This lovely farmhouse with its pretty blue shutters would offer just this type of laid-back lifestyle.
Traditionally built, the landaise stone house has been well renovated and would enable me to enjoy my creature comforts after a day spent kneeling in the vegetable patch and picking fruit from the trees in the orchard.
The interior is light and tastefully decorated, the white walls really bringing out the lovely wooden beams to add that touch of character which makes this house so charming.
I particularly like the ‘snug’ area just by the kitchen, where I see myself curling up by the wood burner to warm up in the colder winter months.
There’s plenty of space, too. With four bedrooms – including two en suites – three bathrooms and 5,766m2 of land, it would be easy to welcome friends and family. And I could also make a living out of this property too, as there is a little two-bedroom gîte within the main house and an outbuilding that offers potential for extra living space.
The house is just under an hour from the coast, and the stunning Landes beaches, but I could easily cool off in the summer by plunging into the pool in the garden. Yes, I think that sounds just like the perfect life in France.
