Campaign trail

Living France - - LES PRATIQUES -

Campaigners are trying to save African-American writer James Baldwin’s home on the Côte d’Azur from being developed into a block of luxury flats. The 17th-century property in the town of St-Paul-de-Vence is where the Harlem-born writer composed many of his famous works and entertained guests including Nina Simone and Ray Charles. It was his wish that the property be turned into an artists’ colony or residence and campaigners are hoping to persuade France’s Ministry of Culture to declare the property part of the country’s heritage and take it over. Failing that, the campaigners will try to raise more than €10m to buy the property, locally known as ‘la maison de Jimmy’.
