Paris transport authorities have launched a campaign to clamp down on travellers evading travel costs after a report by the state auditor found that dodging fares on the Métro, trains and trams costs €366 million a year. New powers for ticket inspectors means they can now enforce a law preventing people from reporting on the presence of a ticket inspector and can detain fare dodgers for up to four hours if they fail to present ID. Those who try to bypass controls can face up to two months in prison and risk a fine of €7,500.
