Sue Bradley reveals what to do in the garden this month, plus our blogger’s seasonal column
1 Plant bare-rooted deciduous trees, shrubs and perennials while they are in their winter dormancy. Winter is also a good time to move existing plants to new sites, but leave evergreens in place. 2 Dig up leeks and other root vegetables and pick sprouts and cabbages as required. 3 Prune apple and pear trees growing in the open ground to encourage a crop of quality fruit next autumn. 4 Make sure outdoor taps are protected with insulation so that they don’t freeze.
