Mean­ing ‘fail­ure’, échec can also meet check­mate – échec et mat (it’s worth not­ing that the game of chess, échecs, is al­ways writ­ten in the plu­ral). Met­tre en échec means ‘to cramp some­one’s style’ and if some­one is mis(e) en échec dur­ing sport it means they are ‘put out of ac­tion’.
