OUR DREAM PROPERTY
Every so often we come across a property that knocks us for six. This month Stephanie Sheldrake dreams of sunning herself in the gardens of this elegant maison de maître in Aude
Stephanie Sheldrake reveals why a maison de maître in sunny Aude is her dream buy
As we begin to reach the end of winter, I’m all too often reminded just how much I yearn for the feel of the warm summer sun on my skin. And when I saw this beautiful maison de maître for sale in the south of France with an outside eating area and heated pool glinting in the bright summer sun, my yearning for a new life in France seemed to reach fever pitch.
As a consummate daydreamer, it wasn’t hard for me to lie back and imagine a new life in this elegant 19th-century property situated close to Carcassonne. The house seems to ooze charm – from the ivy-clad exterior to the parquet floors, marble fireplaces, ceiling cornices and cast-iron radiators that grace the inside; it’s clear that this home has been lovingly restored. Even the new double-glazed windows are handmade replicas of the original wood windows, with the original fittings and shutters to ensure that the house’s period feel is kept well and truly intact.
There’s no shortage of space here, either. With eight bedrooms and five bathrooms, there is plenty of room for friends and family. There is an additional three-bedroom villa, as well as a large barn, which has potential for conversion, an independent office/conference space, garage and summer kitchen, as well as half an acre of south- and west-facing gardens.
The property is currently used as a family home, but there is definite potential here for running a chambres d’hôtes/ gîte business. With the Pyrénées, the Mediterranean coastline and Toulouse in easy reach, this is an ideal location for it.
