OUR DREAM HOME
Group editor Karen Tait explains why a farmhouse in Orne is her dream buy
This property could make a lot of my dreams come true – and at a dream price too! For just €343,000, I could be the proud owner of a farmhouse, two gîtes and several barns, all set in over eight acres of land with my own pond and stream. The location is absolutely idyllic too, in the heart of the Perche regional park in Orne, Normandy.
The character of old French farmhouses always tugs at my heartstrings, and this one has rustic charm in spades. Just look at that gorgeous farmhouse kitchen, just made for baking bread and rustling up delicious dishes to share with family and friends. The living room is huge but still cosy, with three large windows allowing light to flood in, traditional terracotta tiled floor and exposed beams. There are some welcome mod cons here too, including an air pump heating system.
The main house has five bedrooms (lots of room for visitors), with a further two in the gîtes – and should I decide I’d like to bring in some more income from the holiday lets, various large stone outbuildings offer potential for conversion into more living accommodation.
Although I’m reluctant to share this gem with anyone else, if you’re looking for an equestrian property this could be perfect, especially as there’s a further 15 acres available for separate negotiation.
For me, eight acres would be more than enough though. I’d certainly enjoy pottering in the vegetable potager, creating a beautiful cottage garden and soaking up those restful country views. To seal the deal, the property is well located for access – just two hours from the port at Le Havre – and is close to the lovely market town of Longny-au-Perche.
