When their harvest of honey increases, Kevin and Amanda hope to be able to sell some on a craft market basis. Kevin explains that if you want to sell honey, you need to be registered as an agricultural business, and you need to be able to pay the necessary tax regardless of whether you generate revenue or not. “You have to produce about 900 jars of honey a year to break even – about 120 hives’ worth. Bee farming is like any other kind of farming in that it’s not particularly profitable unless you’re doing it on a gigantic scale. Hence we’re not going down the route of being honey producers, but it’s a wonderful by-product of the other things that we do.”
