Af­ter tak­ing ad­vice from a lo­cal bilin­gual ad­viser, the cou­ple orig­i­nally set up the busi­ness un­der the réel sim­pli­fié scheme, so that they could off­set the sub­stan­tial costs in­curred when set­ting up the busi­ness against any prof­its. How­ever, the manda­tory co­ti­sa­tions bur­den made it un­fea­si­ble. “Our ini­tial de­mand for pay­ment was for nearly €6,000 per year against, at that point, rev­enue of less than €1,500,” says Kevin. “If you had the type of busi­ness that gen­er­ates a lot of turnover with lit­tle busi­ness ex­pense, it would make sense.” The cou­ple then de­cided to switch to the mi­cro-en­treprise scheme. “We now pay a higher per­cent­age rate in taxes but we only pay them when we earn some­thing, which works much bet­ter for us now,” says Kevin.
