SETTING UP THE BUSINESS
After taking advice from a local bilingual adviser, the couple originally set up the business under the réel simplifié scheme, so that they could offset the substantial costs incurred when setting up the business against any profits. However, the mandatory cotisations burden made it unfeasible. “Our initial demand for payment was for nearly €6,000 per year against, at that point, revenue of less than €1,500,” says Kevin. “If you had the type of business that generates a lot of turnover with little business expense, it would make sense.” The couple then decided to switch to the micro-entreprise scheme. “We now pay a higher percentage rate in taxes but we only pay them when we earn something, which works much better for us now,” says Kevin.
