A fe­male au­thor will be in­cluded in the study list for France’s lit­er­a­ture bac­calau­réat (the bac L) for the first time since the exam was in­tro­duced more than 20 years ago. Madame de Lafayette’s 17th-cen­tury court ro­mance La Princesse de Mont­pen­sier, as well as Ber­trand Tav­ernier’s 2010 film of the book, will be in­cluded from Septem­ber 2017 for ly­cée stu­dents tak­ing their ex­ams in 2018. The move fol­lows crit­i­cism of the exam syl­labus for be­ing sex­ist.
