From 2018, you may no longer have to fac­tor taxe d’habi­ta­tion costs into your out­go­ings af­ter the gov­ern­ment an­nounced moves to end the pay­ment will start next year. It is ex­pected that 80% of house­holds will ben­e­fit from the re­form of the hous­ing tax; an es­ti­mated 16.6 mil­lion fam­i­lies. Only house­holds with a tax­able in­come of more than €20,000 a year per in­di­vid­ual will still have to pay the taxe d’habi­ta­tion ex­pense. The tax will be re­duced for re­tirees with a pen­sion of just over €1,200 a month but they may be hit hard by the 1.7% in­crease in the CSG so­cial charge which comes into force this year. The move to end the pay­ment comes ear­lier than ex­pected. It had pre­vi­ously been sug­gested that the re­form of the hous­ing tax would take place in 2019.
