For many peo­ple, the idea of own­ing their own home in the UK is fur­ther out of reach than ever be­fore. But take your house hunt across the Chan­nel to France and you’ll find that a mod­est bud­get of €150,000 could buy the house of your dreams. The av­er­age price for a prop­erty in the UK is now £223,000 ac­cord­ing to the most re­cent Land Registry fig­ures, but over these pages we take a closer look at the de­part­ments in France where the av­er­age house price is be­low €150,000 – and there are 45 of them! Prop­er­ties are not only more af­ford­able in France; they of­fer bet­ter value for money: larger liv­ing space, more out­door space and of­ten ex­tra ameni­ties such as a cel­lar or out­build­ings. And the good news is that you don’t have to limit your search to a spe­cific area of France. Okay, so Paris, Provence and the Alps might be out of reach if your bud­get is €150,000 or less, but look how far your money will go across the rest of the coun­try – even in pop­u­lar hot spots such as Char­ente and Dor­dogne.
