Une trace means track, trace, mark or scar, and un tracé means a draw­ing/out­line or route (e.g cy­cling or walk­ing). Une trace de doigt/de pas is a fin­ger­print/foot­print. Suivre (qqn) à la trace means to track/fol­low some­one closely, as in la police suiv­ait le sus­pect à la trace. The verb tracer means to draw/trace/map out but can also mean to get a move on/put your skates on.
