Paris is set for the Olympic Games
Paris has been named as the host city for the 2024 Olympics, 100 years after the French capital last hosted the Summer Games. Paris and Los Angeles (which was named as the host city for the 2028 Games) were the only contenders left for the 2024 Olympics after Hamburg, Rome and Budapest withdrew from the race due to financial concerns. Paris’s campaign team incorporated the Eiffel Tower into their bid and the city’s most famous landmark will itself play an important role in the Games, as the backdrop for the triathlon, marathon and open–water swimming contests. Other Paris landmarks will have a visible role too: Champs de Mars will host the beach volleyball, while the road cycling will finish on the Champs-Élysées and the Palace of Versailles is set to make an impressive location for equestrian events.
