Chalet owners in Le Biot in Haute-Savoie have launched a petition complaining about the noise made by cow bells in neighbouring fields, and have asked the mairie to stop the nuisance. The mairie, outraged by the request, has refused to take the bells away though they say they are considering making a compromise by asking the farmer to place smaller bells on the cows in his herd. According to the town hall in Le Biot, the residents who are complaining are second-home owners, mainly from the UK and Belgium. “These bells are not there to bother residents and tourists,” the mayor said. The farmer, Sébastien Vittoz, who owns the cows says he was surprised by the complaints. “I use the bells so that I can easily find my cows in the mountains,” he said.
