Many people visit Nîmes to see its 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheatre, but to get the full goosebump-inducing experience, you should go during the weekend of the Grand Jeux Romains from 28-30 April. During the three-day event, the city’s amphitheatre will host reenactments of the ‘Great Roman Games’ and will be filled to its 24,000 capacity. From cheering on a spectacle of chariot racing, to watching an equestrian vaulting demonstration and picking your favourite in a gladiatorial combat, you’ll be transported right back to Nîmes’ Roman heyday. Outside the arena’s walls, the city’s streets come alive with fancy dress parades and interactive workshops for children. Each year the festival takes on a different theme and this year’s edition will celebrate the legendary gladiator Spartacus. arenes-nimes.com
