The ongoing battle to have chocolatine recognised as an alternative name for the pain au chocolat has now gained the French parliament’s attention. The term originates from the Gascony region and is widely used in south-western France. MPs from the area recently asked parliament for an amendment to a wider farming and food law that would give the name chocolatine official status. While a ruling in favour is thought to be unlikely, the continued debate shows the level of pride that exists around French food products and heritage.
