Our dream home
Assistant editor Lucy Parford finds a bijou farmhouse for less than €100,000
It’s often said that bigger isn’t always better and how true in the case of this pretty two-bedroom farmhouse located in the Deux-Sèvres department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. While it may be modest in size, the property more than makes up for its cosy proportions with plenty of charm and character, and at under €100,000 the price tag is attractive too.
Situated in the town of Rom, the house is just over half an hour away from Poitiers with its historic medieval centre of half-timbered houses and impressive Église Notre-Dame la Grande, as well as an all-important airport for easy access. Rom itself is a former Roman settlement and historic finds can be browsed in the town’s Musée de Rauranum.
This picturesque farmhouse is also steeped in history, surrounded by an attractive cottage garden with several outbuildings including a barn, workshop and bread oven.
Inside, it has been tastefully decorated with a welcoming kitchen warmed by a log burner for homely dinners and brunches. The adjacent lounge has exposed brickwork, painted beams and a feature fireplace to put your feet up in front of with a well-thumbed book as the cooler nights set in.
A wooden staircase leads up to a romantic mezzanine bedroom, complete with skylight in its sloping roof and rustic wooden floorboards. It’s just made for lazy weekend mornings and breakfast in bed as the sun slowly spreads across your quilt.
There is also a bijou office space, as well as a second bedroom on the first floor for other family members or friends.
At such an affordable price, waking up in a Bohemian French getaway might not be such a big dream after all.
