Cricket stars take on MPs to raise money for our appeal
A TEAM of some of the world’s greatest ever cricketers will play a match against MPs to raise money for our appeal for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.
The Lashings All-Stars, dubbed “the Harlem Globetrotters of cricket”, will take on the Lords & Commons Cricket Club in a Twenty20 game on Tuesday for the Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund.
Lashing’s squad of international stars includes Gordon Greenidge, Saqlain Mushtaq and Courtney Walsh.
The Lords & Commons CC have been playing for more than 150 years and among those to have turned out for them are Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Cabinet ministers past and present, including John Redwood, Ed Balls, Boris Johnson and David Gauke.
Live commentary of the game will be provided by legendary BBC Test Match Special commentator Henry Blofeld and the match is supported and endorsed by the England & Wales Cricket Board.
The ECB’s director of England Cricket Andrew Strauss said: “It’s great that cricket can play a part in bringing help and support to the victims of the Grenfell fire. We would urge as many people as possible to show their support for this fixture, and our thanks go to all to the parliamentarians and ex-cricketers who are taking part. It’s a very important initiative and one which has ECB’s full support and endorsement.”
The match will take place close to the scene of the Grenfell tower disaster in west London, at the Latimer Upper School Sports Ground, Wood Lane, in Shepherd’s Bush, at 6pm on Tuesday.
Our appeal for the Grenfell Tower victims has already raised £4.65million.
