LONDONER Karen O’Mahoney was clear on her requirements for the perfect Alpine holiday home.

“Proximity to an international airport, panoramic mountain views, a large, challenging ski area and a sizeable high-quality apartment with a price that did not match a Zone 1 apartment in London,” lists Karen, 40, who works in private equity. “Nowhere met all my criteria.”

That was until January last year when friends invited her to ski in Andermatt. Karen immediately fell for the resort. “The village blends old and new to stunning effect. The town is traditional with local restaurants serving local specialities and the new facilities are state-of-the-art yet fit perfectly into their surroundings. The skiing is spectacular, the major draw.”

She bought a two-bedroom apartment off-plan and moved in recently. “I visited the site throughout the building process and any nervousness soon gave way to excitement,” she adds. “Given its proximity to Zurich, the high-quality build and the number of snow days, I’m confident it will increase in value.”

Andermatt has the highest levels of guaranteed snow in Switzerland and new lifts link its ski area with that of Sedrun. With golfing, hiking and biking in summer, Karen plans to use her apartment all year round.

flats start at £400,000 and Andermatt, uniquely for Switzerland, has no buying restrictions for foreigners
