WHERE I LIVE — AND WHY I LIVE THERE

My wife, Flo, and I have lived in Fentiman Road, SW8, for 34 years. I’m drawn to the raffish historical associations of Vauxhall. No matter how semi-gentrified it becomes there’s a grungy undertow which keeps it fresh. And it’s quite fun to have the best house in a rough area.

We chose the street because you could buy a reasonably large house in what approximated to central London for a reasonable sum. But actually I want to get the whole area branded as “S1”. Anthony Trollope when he was at the Post Office was responsible for the original postcodes and he didn’t like south London so we never got an S1. I’m hoping to sell the idea to the Americans because I’m sure they’d like their new embassy to be in S1 rather than SW8.
