t may look like we’re on our sofa on a Sunday at 9pm. And yes, those may appear to be pyjamas we are wearing. But your eyes deceive you, for we’re actually on the Cornish moors, dressed in a flowing frock, with an ever-so-dashing army captain riding a trusty stead beside us. Such is the power of the brilliant BBC drama, Poldark, in which we are transported to Cornwall in the 1700s. And it’s all thanks to Aidan Turner.

The Dublin-born actor (who is best known for The Hobbit trilogy and BBC3’S Being Human) has stepped into the role of Ross Poldark, a war hero who returns home to Cornwall to find his father dead, the family estate in ruins and the love of his life betrothed to his cousin. The story follows him as he tries to rebuild his life (and, at points, walls, too – which he does rather pleasingly with his top off), while battling with his feelings for old flame Elizabeth and new love interest, maid Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson). And trust us, it’s Aidan, 31, who makes this the seriously sexy period drama our Sunday nights have been waiting for. With that in mind, we decided to find out a few facts about the man himself…
