It’s not too unusual an announcement, but when Beyoncé dedicated Halo to her husband Jay Z on the opening night of her Formation World Tour in Miami last week, we couldn’t help but scratch our heads in confusion. Why? Well, Bey’s proclamation of love came just days after she dropped her most anticipated solo album yet, Lemonade – and several of its tracks seemed to imply that 46-year-old music mogul Jay had cheated on his wife on more than one occasion. Yikes.
Yep, Lemonade made headlines around the world with lyrics such as ‘You gon’ lose your wife’ and ‘My daddy warned me about men like you/ He said, “Baby girl, he’s playing you”’ leaving many people speculating about the state of the couple’s marriage. But as sales sky-rocketed and the column inches rolled in, 34-year-old Beyoncé kept quiet, leading people to question whether she’d masterminded the whole situation to promote her album, something that sources close to the star say could be a possibility.
‘I think Beyoncé’s taking control of the narrative and that’s empowering,’ a friend of the star tells Look. ‘While she seems to be lashing out at Jay for the way he’s treated her, her end goal is always about making sure her music’s at the top of the charts and her tours are sold out.’
