Alessandra Ambrosio: ‘If I Want A Piece Of Cake, I’ll Have Some’
Daily workouts, two kids and a modelling career that’s lasted over two decades – Beauty Editor Sam Freedman gets the scoop on how Alessandra Ambrosio does it all…
I’ve studied Alessandra Ambrosio from head to toe. No, not in a weird, stalker way, but in a #Womancrushwednesday kind of way – we all have, right?! Her bod is to die for, her skin always looks flawless and her hair looks super-sexy pretty much all the time. So when the 35-year-old was announced as L’oréal Professionnel’s new brand ambassador for its DIA Richesse Hi-visibility salon hair colour, I was the first to book in for an interview.
I travelled to meet the Victoria’s Secret legend – she’s walked as a VS Angel for 11 years – in Paris. Wearing a tassel leather skirt, satin white blouse and killer black heels, she was hosting the launch of L’oréal’s new hair app Style My Hair in a penthouse suite at the very swanky Le Meurice Hotel. I sat down to chat to the mother of two, model since the age of 12 and fashion designer (she’s got her own swimwear line Ále by Aessandra) – yep, we know, she’s pretty much Superwoman! The most important question… how do you do it all? I guess I just love what I do. I love being a model, being a mum and doing my collection. I think getting organised is key. I always look at my schedule, prioritise and make sure I don’t waste time. How do you switch off? When I have some downtime I roll out my mat and do yoga. Especially because I travel so much, it gives me energy. And also listening to music. Are there any other amazing workouts you do? I think you get great results when you do Pilates, and also barre classes. If I’m not working I try to exercise almost every day, but if I’m travelling then at least four times a week. Is there anything you hate doing at the gym? I hate going to the gym! So I always do a class. What area of your body do you work on the most? My legs, butt and abs. Those are my three target areas. What motivates you? It’s all about feeling good about your body and being healthy. You want to wake up and look at yourself in the mirror and be OK with it. On top of that, working out gives me the energy my body needs to do whatever I want, like playing with my kids. What’s on your playlist? I like the new Calvin Harris song. I’m a rock chick, though. I love classic rock, so anything by Fleetwood Mac and Led Zeppelin. Wow, we’d never have thought you were a rock chick! I know! I look more like a pop girl, don’t I? Does it ever get old to hear you’re the most beautiful woman in the world? Well, I don’t really hear it that much. It’s always nice to get compliments, I guess. Do you still get nervous when
you do big shows like Victoria’s Secret?
I definitely feel very comfortable and I know what I’m doing when I’m backstage, so I don’t really get that nervous. But when it comes to going out on the runway I do get butterflies.
Are there any new Angels you love?
Yes, there are a few… Taylor [Hill] and Josephine [Skriver]. I think they’re so pretty and young and I can definitely see them shining.
Does ageing worry you?
I like to take care of myself. I use antiageing creams and take care of my skin – I use sunblock, eat very healthily and apart from that I guess there’s nothing else you can do. You have to embrace what you have and take care of it.
What foods give you the best glow?
I love green juices, so definitely that. I eat avocado every day; it’s yummy and very healthy. I just try to eat as fresh and healthy as possible. Obviously I love chocolate and a cake here and there.
So are you a sweet or savoury girl?
I used to be all about sweets but after my pregnancy I changed. Now I’d rather have a miso soup than chocolate. Things I never eat are usually things I don’t like. If I want a piece of cake I’ll have one, but I don’t need to have the whole cake. I try to eat salads and lean protein at least once or twice a day.
Tell us about your beauty regime.
For my skin, I just like to keep it as natural as possible. I always put on a BB cream in the morning, a good moisturiser and maybe a pretty blush.
If we emptied your handbag right now, what would we find?
My passport and telephone. Something for my lips – I like to keep them moisturised. There’s always something for my kids. Sunblock and those refreshing water facial sprays – I love those.
What SPF do you swear by?
One with a little colour; I don’t like the ones that make you white. I try to get something that has a bit of a tint to it.
Being the face of L’oréal Professionnel, do you feel pressure to always have amazing hair?
The thing with L’oréal is that the products are amazing and once you use them your hair instantly looks amazing. I did my hair yesterday with Dia Richesse Hi-visibility Hair Colour and it gives the most amazing shine.
What are your timesaving hair tricks?
I usually just let it dry naturally. If I’m on the go, I just keep it simple and let the wind do its job! The dry shampoo from L’oréal will give a little bit of body, soak up oil and revive second-day hair. Then a nice serum to give a bit of shine.
Would you ever go blonde again like you did for the Givenchy AW16 show?
That’s a good question! I think with the right products to get a nice colour, yes. But as of right now, I think I’m going to keep to my red tone.
Who would you say is your hair inspiration?
Cindy Crawford has beautiful hair.
Who is the coolest person you’ve ever done a shoot with?
That’s a hard one. I shot the Pirelli calendar with Helena Christensen. She’s one of my favourite models and I was like: ‘Oh my God – I can’t believe I’m shooting with you.’
Let’s talk about your amazing body. What products do you use?
I love oils after a shower – I always moisturise. And sometimes I’ll use those anti-cellulite creams to help tighten my legs.
We’re coming up to holiday season. What are your top packing tips?
Always have a leather jacket and a pair of pumps because you never know where you’re going to end up. Flip-flops and a swimsuit are also a must. Those are my essentials. I like to keep it basic.
Do you have in-flight beauty tricks?
A nice moisturiser or a mask, like a sheet mask. Something transparent, that you can use without anyone looking at you weirdly, will help keep your skin really hydrated.
Make-up on the beach – yay or nay?
No, never! The beach is really about protecting yourself and I love the salty air on my skin.
What Brazilian beauty products do you stock up on when you’re home?
Natural coconut oil – it’s good for the entire body. Also, coconut water is yummy and something I drink every day when I’m back home.
