Life Lessons From Fitstagrammer Kayla Itsines

Kayla Itsines, 25, has become an Instagram sensation, responsible for shaping the bodies of her 5.3m followers with her Bikini Body Guide – and we’re so on board. We sat down with her to find out what she’s learned on her journey

1 Believe in yourself

‘Girls all over the world follow my workouts and when I head up a boot camp, they come up to me and tell me their stories. Sometimes they cry and tell me I changed their life with my BBG plan but that’s not true. I tell them: “You did that yourself; that was all you.”’

2 Learn From Your Hard Times

‘Last year I launched my app and had a bit of backlash [from people who’d already paid for the plan online]. But I think it was just a case of me disrupting the industry, which had previously been all about fad diets and exercise programmes, whereas I just said: “Be healthy.” It’s now settled down and the girls love it. They tell me all the time.’

3 Be Nice

‘I like to treat everyone like family. I’m Greek and have a huge family, but I don’t get any special treatment. My grandparents have no idea what I do. They tell me to go to university and to get off my phone. They don’t get that it’s my work, but I like that.’

4Take The Day Off

‘I have days when I don’t feel motivated to do anything, and I’m honest with my followers. If I have my period, I let them know. They tell me it means they feel like they can relax and chill– it’s important. Some girls are shocked when I tell them I eat pasta. Yes, I eat pasta. It’s OK! I also digi-detox by watching Game Of Thrones with my boyfriend.’

5 Get a reality check

‘Instagram’s amazing, but it’s important for me to be myself online and to represent the real me. Blogging’s hard because girls are given products and paid to talk about them, but I don’t. What you see is what you get.’

6 Stop Comparing Yourself To Others

‘When it comes to posting, you won’t see me take a photo on a rainy day – I’ll post one on a sunny day. You see a lot of highlights of people’s lives and it’s not always real. It’s good to remember that. A prime example is celebrities. They say they’re so in love and then suddenly it’s all about divorce.’

7 trust Your instincts

‘i don’t want to sound like an idiot, but i did everything the way i wanted to. i was really sporty and because i wanted to play basketball and there was no girls’ team, i just joined the boys’ team. when my mum told me i wouldn’t be able to have a career in sport, i followed my instincts. i decided to do personal training and everyone was so against it, but i just did it. Follow your dreams. if you think it’s right, then it’s right. you don’t have to listen to other people’s opinions. listen to yourself. Girls take in a lot of outside opinion and it’s not always good.’

8 Ignore The Trolls

‘Social media can be both a good and bad thing. I’m lucky because my community and the way it’s built means that everyone has each other’s backs. In the beginning, I’d re-upload photos because some people would comment, saying we’d Photoshopped girls’ before and after photos and I’d justify that. That’s why I now tag people into the photos so other girls can check them out. I just ignore the negative and work on the positive.’

9 don’t believe Your own hype

‘My parents taught me to focus on how you feel, not on how you look. I’m from Australia. Doing well isn’t a big thing. In the US and the UK, everyone thinks I’m so cool, but I’m like: “It’s just my job.”’

10 work with Great mentors

‘I’m so excited to work with Adidas as I love their clothes and I’m quite particular about what I wear. I only have a few outfits and six pairs of trainers. I usually only wear white trainers and they created a pair just for me. I was jumping up and down! As a rule, I don’t accept gifts and send anything back that I receive.’
