It might not be a poignant date for most, but for Taylor Swift it probably is. It was the day before her shock relationship with Tom Hiddleston was revealed and probably the last time she felt in control of her own life. Because in five short weeks, her entire world has been turned upside down.
Her latest battle? She’s been snubbed from the MTV Video Music Awards, despite releasing three eligible videos this year. It’s quite the contrast to last year’s VMAS pre-show, where Taylor premiered her Wildest Dreams video and had no less than 10 nominations, winning four awards. ‘Not getting a VMA nod has been another huge blow for Taylor,’ says our source. ‘She really feels like the whole world is against her and her confidence is at an all-time low.’
There are now rumours that Kanye West is influencing the situation thanks to their ongoing feud over his song Famous, plus there’s speculation Katy Perry will be the opening act at this year’s 25 August ceremony, with a planned ‘revenge song’ after Taylor’s Bad Blood takeover in 2016. And, not surprisingly, Tay’s not taking it well.
‘She’s numb and in total shock,’ says a pal. ‘She can’t quite get her head around where this animosity towards her has come from. The thing with Kim and Kanye has enraged her. She feels betrayed, used and humiliated.’
Friends of the star say she was also stung by her ex Calvin Harris cosying up to Kim Kardashian at Jennifer Lopez’s birthday party in Las Vegas last week. The DJ also followed in Kim’s footsteps by sharing a video of himself miming along to Famous. But while every week seems to bring more drama, Kimye aren’t the main thing tearing Taylor apart – it’s the online backlash, which is out of control.
‘Taylor had no idea she was so despised,’ reveals a friend. ‘It’s destroyed her. She might come across as sassy and cold, but she’s actually incredibly insecure. She’s not coping at all with the hate being flung in her direction.’
