Seven Things We Learnt From The Rio Olympics
Excuse us while we put on our swimming hats – we are très sporty now
Last week we ran, cycled and dived into a (bright green) vat full of Olympic-shaped obsession. We stayed up to watch the swimming, cheered on Team GB and felt sportier than ever. We haven’t been this excited by the Olympics since, well, 2012. Here’s what we took away...
1 It Was Full Of Cute Couples
We love a little romance, so we were kinda obsessed with Brit gold medal gymnast Max Whitlock and his fiancée Leah Hickton’s insta-perfect relationship. And then there’s that engagement. After Chinese diver He Zi picked up a silver, her boyfriend Qin Kai proposed. But we wonder, did he ruin her big moment?
2 biker braids are totally a thing
So we know it’s meant to be about the sport, but it’s also about the hair. We were already barmy for braids, but after we saw cyclists Laura Trott and Elinor Barker line up we raced to the hairdressers so fast you’d think we were up against Usain Bolt.
3 cupping is back
It might look painful but any Olympic athlete worth their salt was into cupping this year (it boosts blood flow, FYI) with swimmers Michael Phelps and gymnast Aly Raisman both sporting bruises.
4 they don’t just get busy on the track...
The athletes were given 450,000 condoms and swimmer Ryan Lochte claimed that ‘75 per cent of Olympians are at it’ in the village. Brazilian diver Ingrid Oliveira reportedly spent the night with canoeist Pedro Goncalves after kicking her diving partner Giovanna Pedroso out of their shared room. Giovanna later declared their partnership over. Awks.
5 Usain Bolt Is Our Monday Motivation
Imagine being so good at running you can turn to smile for the cameras mid-race and still win. That was Usain Bolt in the 100 metres, putting everyone else to shame and inspiring a deluge of hilarious memes.
6 Peanut Butter makes you an athlete*
Whether you’re eating it with a banana like gymnast Simone Biles or having it in a smoothie like football star Nicole Barnhart, the spread 100 per cent makes you an athlete. *More hunch than fact.
7 Helen Skelton’s outfits Win
She might have got some flak from old men who don’t know how to dress, but in your eyes presenter Helen Skelton wins gold for her sartorial style. A whopping 73 per cent of you on look.co.uk said you loved her looks. Go Helen!
