Charlotte Simone, 27
Job Title: Founder of Charlotte Simone
Job Description: Designing Charlotte Simone accessories, running the business day to day
GET inspired I studied English Literature and Art at New York University but when I ended up in Paris during my third year, that’s when my passion for accessories sprung to life. I was so inspired by how chic Parisian women were and how they could build an entire outfit from a singular accessory. I knew I could create something like that.
Make Work experience Matter I managed to get an internship with womenswear designer Charlotte Ronson as well as an internship at Brides magazine. I just wanted to get immersed in that world.
USE your CONTACTS I really believed I could do it, so not knowing where to really begin, I called in my friend. She was studying at Parsons School of Design in Manhattan and I made my first scarf with her in the garment district – it was an ad hoc learning experience but I think it was the best way.
GET STUCK in When you have a passion for something that you do, you have to give it everything. My first range was only three scarves! I simply
took my samples and went straight to the stores to show them my collection. I found that most buyers were excited by a young girl going out and trying it on her own.
Take advice I think it’s really important to find someone you trust and can seek advice and support from. You need a mentor who has experience within the business world and someone who can help you plan to allow you to move forward.
