Angelina took control last week, blindsiding husband Brad and calling him an ‘unfit’ parent. *Mind explodes*

Lies, jealousy, heated arguments, angst, betrayal… Unfortunately this isn’t the tagline of a hot new Hollywood film, but instead the unfolding and recently exposed secrets behind the marriage of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, which came crashing down when Ange filed for divorce on 20 September – just one month after their second wedding anniversary.

What has ensued is a murky, dark portrayal of a relationship filled with drama, all behind the façade of the happiest of family lives.

Angelina, 41, cited ‘irreconcilable differences’ on the divorce papers, filed by infamous divorce lawyer Laura Wasser (who recently represented Johnny Depp during his divorce from Amber Heard) – and shocked us all by asking for sole custody of the couple’s six children, a move that seems designed to keep Brad very much on the edge of family life. Entertainment attorney Robert Offer explained in a statement on Angelina’s behalf: ‘This decision was made for the health of the family.’

Brad, 52, who reportedly had no idea this was on the cards (and who still assumed the family would be in London together this week) has apparently vowed to fight claims he’s an ‘unfit’ parent and told a US magazine following their split after 11 years together: ‘I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids.’ So what went wrong for the A-list couple we definitely thought would go the distance?

‘The relationship’s been volatile for a long time,’ says our source. ‘But even though Angelina’s ultimately the one pulling the plug, that doesn’t mean she’s not in a world of pain right now. She knows she can’t forgive him or take him back.’

Brad and Angelina met on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith back in 2004, while Brad was still married to first wife Jennifer Aniston. The pair later admitted it was during filming that they fell in love, with Ange saying she ‘couldn’t wait to get to work’.

Just months after Brad and Jen separated in 2005, he and Ange were swept into an intense and passionate relationship.

Brad formally adopted Angelina’s children Maddox and Zahara before the duo quickly began adding to their brood with Pax, Shiloh and twins Vivienne and Knox. They were red carpet royalty, amassing a fortune of £308m, and tied the knot in an intimate family ceremony at their estate in the South of France in 2014. But almost immediately they were thrown in at the deep end, filming By The Sea together as part of their honeymoon. The flick, about a couple’s marriage falling apart, was panned by critics on its release, and reportedly put an intense strain on Brad and Ange’s relationship.

‘Part of the reason Angie gave in to getting married was that she thought it might help them hold it together,’ a source tells Look. ‘For a while they seemed to be working through things, but the fact that the movie was a flop really stung, not to mention the millions they lost on it.’

The pair then had to deal with spending months apart in different countries, with Brad filming all over the world and Angelina pursuing her humanitarian duties as a United Nations ambassador. And they were both rocked by Ange’s discovery she was a carrier of the BRCA1 gene, the same gene that resulted in her mother Marcheline’s cancer and subsequent death in 2007. Ange made the tough decision to undergo a double mastectomy, with Brad proudly supporting his wife.

But while they seemed the perfect couple to the outside world, there were signs of cracks. They were seen having a heated exchange during a family trip to Legoland in Windsor last October, while there have been accusations of substance abuse, as well as claims that days before the split Brad’s behaviour while aboard a private jet with his family pushed Angelina to breaking point – although the LAPD has denied investigating Brad for any reason, despite reports.

‘Ange is beyond devastated she’s had to file for divorce,’ says an insider. ‘But she believes it’s best, especially for the children.’

With Brad desperate to fight for his kids and sources saying the earliest the pair can legally split is 20 March, here’s hoping things don’t get any uglier…
