‘I’m Proud Not Pushy’
But the fashion designer still panics over ‘momager’ parenting
As Victoria Beckham prepares to publicly support Eva Longoria-bastón, 41, at her BFF’S Global Gift Gala in London’s Corinthia Hotel this weekend, Look can exclusively reveal that behind the scenes – in the world of VB – the busy working mum of four is set on ‘empowering’ her own brood. But Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ matriarch Kris Jenner, 61, shouldn’t fear losing her ‘momager’ crown just yet, because the former Spice Girl doesn’t want to be a pushy mum to Brooklyn, 17, Romeo, 14, Cruz, 11, and Harper, five.
‘With Brooklyn and Romeo carving out their own future careers, Victoria is desperate to avoid being one of those overly demanding “showbiz momagers” that you see behind a lot of young stars,’ a source tells Look. Instead, VB, 42, appears to remain in her children’s shadow, having mastered the art of Instasharing ‘non-pushy’ posts of her kids’ abilities and achievements in a series of fly-on-the-wall style shots.
Brooklyn's modelling career is taking off – he's the new face of Pull&bear and a £100k advertising campaign with mobile phone firm Huawei. Meanwhile, his brother Romeo has modelled for Burberry, and is being inundated with offers. But while VB is more than willing to help her kids get noticed on social media – last week she posed with Brookyln and Kevin Systrom, CEO and co-founder of Instagram, at her Dover Street store, which she captioned: ‘Business meetings can be fun’ – insiders tell Look she’s panicking about how they will cope with fame.
‘Victoria is delighted that Romeo and Cruz are doing so well but she is extremely protective of them,’ says our insider. ‘There are at least 20 work requests a week from major brands and businesses.’ As someone who was exposed to fame from a young age in the Spice Girls, she knows first-hand how fame can be a double-edged sword. And it’s no secret that Cruz is keen to follow in his mother’s footsteps after cute videos of him singing and playing guitar went viral. But with Brooklyn catching up his mum’s 12.8 million Instagram follows with an impressive 8.7 million following, VB is doubting her parenting methods.
In an interview with The Sunday Times Style, Victoria admitted she and husband David, 41, are ‘very strict’ as parents. But the designer, who juggles family life with her growing fashion empire, is feeling the pressure to be with her kids as much as possible. She admits: ‘I am being pulled in four different directions with the children.’ However sources tell Look VB fears she lacks strength: ‘Victoria gets really nervous and apprehensive about letting her boys become such big showbiz names. She wonders if she’s being a strong enough mother figure by letting them carve out their own careers at a young age. She can be needlessly self-critical.’
Well, those kids look very happy to us, Vic!
