‘I Love That Emily’s So Sassy’
THIS FRIDAY, WE Finally GET a GILMORE GIRLS UPDATE AFTER PATIENTLY WATCHING RE-RUNS FOR YEARS. NETFLIX’S GILMORE GIRLS: a year IN THE LIFE IS THE ULTIMATE NOSTALGIA HIT as LORELAI, RORY AND THE LEGEND That IS EMILY GILMORE – Played By Kelly BISHOP – RETURN, AND IT’S EVERYTHING WE’D BEEN HOPING FOR. WE SAT DOWN WITH THE Ever-glam Kelly TO FIND OUT MORE… What’s it like to be back in Gilmore Girls? It’s heaven – just like coming home. Did you have any concerns about returning to the show? No, I was pressuring Amy [Shermanpalladino, the show’s writer] for years to see if we could do a movie. My only problem was filming in California. Urgh! I prefer New York. Red carpets and the celebrity stuff really isn’t my cup of tea. What do you love most about playing Emily Gilmore? She’s just outspoken – so sassy. I love to play her as awful as possible, but I somehow made her sympathetic because people don’t hate me as much as I thought. Put it this way, you wouldn’t want her as a mother! Has her difficult relationship with her daughter Lorelai mellowed? No, it’s just taken on a more mature dysfunction. We have really sweet moments and then some awful ones. But we know they’re fiercely loyal to each other. I would fight anyone who would hurt her – but then I’d fight with Lorelai, of course. Your on-screen husband Richard (Edward Herrmann) passed away in 2014. Was it emotional being without him on set? There was a real emptiness without Ed. We were anticipating that, but it still felt bad. At the start of the new series it’s six months after Richard has died. Emily says in one scene: ‘We were married for 50 years – half of me is gone.’ Throughout the show she finds her way. We love Emily’s style. Do you have a fave? In all those years, I actually ended up only keeping a couple of outfits – I’m not that much of a thief! I bought the Emily Gilmore necklace because she’s a rich woman and needed a statement piece of jewellery. I only wear it when I’m in character. I couldn’t, it’s Emily’s!
