When we hit the gym, most of us have a general pattern. The consensus among the Look team is to get straight into some high-intensity cardio before moving on to strength exercises. But burning up a sweat in the weights area – we’re still not going there.
Why? It’s not just because this section of the gym is dominated by guys and girls taking selfies for their Tinder profile. Instead, it’s because we’re just not quite sure exactly what to do.
‘Weightlifting doesn’t just strengthen muscles, it strengthens bones, too, reducing the chance of developing osteoporosis,’ says Look fitness influencer Zanna Van Dijk. ‘Building muscle mass also boosts fat-burning and allows you to become stronger physically and mentally.’
According to a US study by the American Centers for Disease Control, weightlifting can boost metabolic rate (the rate at which you burn calories) by up to 15 per cent.
