Some shops hold a certain nostalgia for us all. Chances are, you bought your first self-selected item of clothing from Tammy Girl at the tender age of 12 (a shopping rite of passage if there ever was one), a ‘proper’ fashwun buy from Topshop at 15 and, whether you bought anything or not, it’s likely you tried on all the dresses in Monsoon, desperately searching for The One in anticipation of that great teenage milestone: the leavers’ ball.

Fast-forward to 2017 and, amid the taffeta and tulle, Monsoon has so much more to offer. For the new season, the brand has cemented itself as the ultimate trend hotspot on the high street and it’s the subtler pieces that really warrant the ‘must-have’ accolade. Precision-cut military jackets, pleated palazzos so wide they’re tiptoeing on couture territory and the most beautifully crafted slip dress we’ve ever laid eyes on; these are true game-changers.

Intricate embroidery is a given – this is Monsoon after all – but the showstopping crop jacket and shorts combo (which comes with Valentinoworthy needlework as standard) ensures Monsoon has pole position going into SS17…
