Victoria: ‘only i can save david’
She’s very strong but there have been a few teary moments
After those leaked emails, the Beckhams are at breaking point. But Victoria’s determined the scandal won’t beat them…
Victoria Beckham should be basking in the reviews of her New York Fashion Week show. She should be looking forward to her next project, the second drop of her Estée Lauder make-up range (out Friday). She should at least be thinking about a holiday. But following leaked emails between husband David, 41, and his PR advisor Simon Oliveira, Victoria, 42, has a more pressing job: working on her marriage and saving the pair’s public image. It’s Operation Brand Beckham.
‘Victoria will do whatever it takes to get back on track,’ says an insider. ‘She knows they can do it.’
But can they? ‘Beckileaks’ has been a huge PR blow to the couple. The explosive emails, which seem to reveal David’s attempts to use charity work as part of a campaign for a knighthood, as well as the star’s comments about Katherine Jenkins (‘OBE for what? Singing at the rugby and going to see the troops plus taking coke. F**king joke’) have cast ‘Goldenballs’ in a pretty unflattering light. Former fans have blasted the star – even X Factor judge Sharon Osbourne admitted she was ‘disappointed’ over the scandal. And mezzo-soprano Katherine, 36, hit back at David via her manager Jonathan Shalit, who spoke out about her ‘services to music and charity’, adding: ‘With regards to the taking of coke, which Katherine has courageously publicly admitted with great honesty – this was when she was in her early twenties, still studying.’
This latest scandal comes a month after reports surfaced that Victoria’s fashion label suffered a loss of £4.6 million despite taking a £6.7 million loan from David’s company. A rep clarified the figures ‘misrepresented how the couple’s businesses operate’, adding that a private holding company overseeing all their businesses ‘reports a substantial profit’. But add to that David and Victoria’s disagreements over whether to relocate to Miami for David’s new football club venture, as well as their gruelling work schedules, which have seen them spend weeks apart, and the couple are now in crisis talks, with Victoria vowing to take the reigns.
‘She’s pulled in a team of top advisors, PR people and image consultants for guidance,’ a close pal tells Look. ‘It’s clear it will be Victoria who’s in charge of what happens next. She’s been through so much with David that she’s best placed to make big decisions about how they bounce back from this scandal. She knows it could have a massive impact on both their careers and has a very clear plan.’
During a recent appearance on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, David confessed he and Victoria had faced ‘tough times’ – and this certainly adds to the list. What’s more, the coverage following David’s recent night out with model Poppy Delevingne, 30, at LA’S Soho House, during which he was snapped opening a car door for her at the end of the evening, is said to have infuriated Victoria. But with David flying back from LA on 3 February for crisis talks, while Victoria left for NYC on 4 February, the pair had little time to discuss matters – something that’s hurt Victoria.
‘She’s very strong, but Vic’s taken this all to heart – she cares what people think about her,’ says a source. ‘There have been a few teary moments.’
And while the rest of the Beckham clan have been putting on brave faces, posting family Instagram shots and taking a business-as-usual approach on social media, Victoria’s focus has been on moving forward.
‘She’s trying to convince David to do something really big to turn the tide of negativity towards them,’ says our source. ‘She’s thinking they can do something like a big interview to help sort out this mess.’
As Look went to press, there were reports David had been blackmailed about the release of the emails. It’s fair to say this is going to be a very testing time for the Beckhams – but if there’s any woman who get them through it, it’s definitely Victoria.
