THE CONSCIOUS CLOSET
One of the high street’s leading lights when it comes to sustainable fashion, H&M’S new drop will blow your mind
If we were to show you dresses made from rubbish found scattered along the sea shore and skirts made from recycled plastic bottles, how would you expect them to look? Would you assume they would in fact be sweeping gowns adorned with sculptural frills? Would you imagine that said gowns would hit the red carpet? Let’s assume you answered no to those questions. We hope you like surprises, as H&M’S new Conscious Exclusive Collection is exactly what we’ve described.
The key piece? An ethereal, blush-hued gown recently worn by Rooney Mara to the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty, crafted from fabric made of recycled shoreline waste. The rest of the range is just as dreamy and, more importantly, just as ethical. Sequin cami tops with ribbon detail, beautiful silk skirts with abstract floral prints, costume jewels, screen-printed jackets and even a floor-sweeping tulle dress for any prospective brides. Even the mules, with their decorative heels, are more artwork than high-street staple.
Supermodel Natalia Vodianova is the face of the Conscious Exclusive range and says: ‘H&M’S collection shows how the best style can be mindful of the planet, to help protect it for the future. It’s all so desirable, with pieces made in sustainable materials that you want to wear for seasons to come.’
As well as irresistible womenswear, the collection features men’s pieces and, for the first time, kidswear, as well as a set of ecological fragrances. Launching on 20 April, these really are the kind of clothes to queue for. See you in line…
