Stradivarius

With a relationship that goes back further than her marriage, Look’s Maxine Eggenberger charts her secret love affair with Zara’s younger sister…

Look (UK) - - FIRST LOOK -

Like all great stories, this tale takes place in the year 2003. I was a 13-year-old girl who, on the cusp of sartorial understanding, was spending her summer in the exotic, far-flung destination of mainland Spain. With my mum and stepdad. Staying in an apartment with broken air conditioning. What a time it was to be alive.

It was the end of our two-week adventure when I, in a frantic daze to spend my remaining euros, went looking for the thing that would make all my friends go ‘ooh’ when I returned home cultured, sophisticated and looking baller. That’s when I saw it: a treble clef, floating in the haze of the summer evening. It was the emblem of Stradivarius which, unbeknown to me, was Zara’s sister label.

I rushed in and it wasn’t long before I discovered exactly what I was looking for: a khaki crochet crop cardigan (try saying that five times fast) and a jumbo metal leaf pendant, suspended from a leather thong necklace. Paired with a white vest, I looked the s**t.

Now, 14 years later, my love affair with Stradivarius only grows in intensity – as yours does too, evidently. Figures have shown that searches for the outfitter are up 66.5 per cent year-on-year, making it one of the most in-demand brands of 2017. Striking the perfect balance between cool AF buys and suits-every-girl staples, it’s positioned itself as one of the major fashion forces to be reckoned with on the Great British high street. Not bad, considering it only launched a UK website in 2013 and opened its first store on Brit soil a year later.

Personally, I’m all about the oversized stripe shirt layered under a denim miniskirt. And the silver Alexander Wang dupe sandals. And that floral dress. Where are those leftover euros when you need them?… Too soon?
