From breath­ing to bend­ing, yoga is all about re­lax­ation and we’ve def­i­nitely felt the ben­e­fits of a daily sun salutation. But ahead of In­ter­na­tional Yoga Day on 21 June, we’re work­ing that lit­tle bit harder on our flow. The workout god­desses at Gym­box have launched the first Loaded Yoga class, which sees class mem­bers equipped with an­kle and/or leg weights. Why? Let us ex­plain.

While we wouldn’t ex­pect to burn much fat from an ‘om’ here and a down­ward dog there, we’re ac­tu­ally way more likely to ac­ti­vate mus­cle fi­bres through weighted yoga than we are through ply­o­met­ric (ex­plo­sive, high in­ten­sity) move­ments. Yep, you’re a lot less likely to get in­jured, too, since the idea is to prac­tice slow and con­trolled mo­tions. Just 35 min­utes in and we guar­an­tee you’ll be drip­ping in sweat. The fi­nal 10? Savasana, the nap at the end of class. Let’s get it ‘om’.
