TAYLOR: GOING IT ALONE
She’s finally got the dream guy, but a year on from that 4 July party Taylor Swift’s squad has vanished
One thing that’s been synonymous with Taylor Swift since the beginning of time has been her very public displays of affection with her BFFS. From her 2014 Bad Blood music video, where she recruited her pals as extras, to her Instagram posts declaring her love for them, Taylor will go down in history as the woman who invented the #squad. But since she’s been happily coupled up with actor Joe Alwyn, her squad is nowhere to be seen. So, erm, what’s happened, guys?
It has been a very difficult few years for 27-year-old Tay. After a high-profile 15-month romance with DJ Calvin Harris, the pair split with a bitter fallout on Twitter in 2016. Taylor then got together with Brit actor Tom Hiddleston. The pair were plastered all over social media – remember that stars ’n’ stripes 4 July party photo shoot? – only to fizzle out three months later. Insiders reveal it ‘devastated’ Tay, who believed Tom was the guy she’d be with forever.
‘The split with Tom hurt her like nothing else,’ reveals one of Taylor’s colleagues. ‘It changed her and made her realise she needed to shift her focus and start looking after number one.’
Fast forward a year – during which time Taylor has remained largely hidden from the public eye – and the singer’s now said to be ‘incredibly happy’ with 26-year-old Joe, introducing him to her parents in Nashville last week after spending Father’s Day with his family in the UK in June. But now that Taylor’s so happy, where are the friends who supported her through her former heartache? Insiders tell Look it’s a deliberate move.
‘Taylor’s worried about ruining things with Joe. She likes that they’ve been able to keep out of the spotlight,’ says another source. ‘It’s no coincidence that they’ve been able to keep it more private since she’s kept it on the lowdown with her A-list mates.’
We’re told that after she and Tom broke up, Taylor decided to spend time working on herself, and that meant seeing only the people closest to her – her family and school friends Britany Maack and Abigail Anderson, both 28. ‘She kept the situation with Joe completely under wraps,’ says our source. ‘Taylor’s phone started going crazy when news broke that she had this new guy – it was a total surprise. Gigi [Hadid] even sent her flowers. But Tay’s been very cool about it all.’
Fans have been kept out of the loop too. Swifties gathered at her Rhode Island pad last week in the hope of seeing their idol celebrating with another big party, but despite being at the house, Taylor stayed inside. And we wonder how the squad feels about being left in the dark in the same way? Apparently there have been some issues.
‘It’s sad,’ says a source. ‘Taylor feels the need to keep her relationship with Joe really quiet. She’s paranoid. She just wants to focus on her time with him and build on her relationships with the people closest to her.’
We just hope it’s the right move, Taylor – mates before dates, as they say.
She just wants to focus on her time with Joe and with her closest pals
