Welcome To Miami

It might be home to the rich and famous, but can you really do South Beach on a budget? Look’s Art Editor Daniel Tang finds out…

Look (UK) - - FIT -

Surrounded by sun-kissed beaches, pretty palm trees and gorgeous Art Deco buildings, Miami is a melting pot for a rich mix of cultures, races and beliefs. Blue skies and white sands aside, it has so much more to offer than the super-luxe ‘Will Smith song’ lifestyle…

STAY To be at the centre of everything I crashed at the Spanish-style El Paseo Hotel (standard rooms from £103pn, elpaseohotel.com) just off South Beach, before moving onto the luxurious Vagabond Hotel (rooms from £100pn, thevagabondhotel.com). The pool was the perfect place to play out my ‘I’m rich and famous’ fantasy, with my room’s rain shower, kingsize bed and Wi-fi (oh hiii, Instagram!) contributing to the illusion.

EAT Nicknamed ‘the capital of Latin America’, Miami’s foodie heaven. Bargain Cuban-style breakfast can be found at Havana 1957 (havana1957.com), while The Peacock Spot Garden Bistro (peacockspot.com) does a mean lobster omelette. But one of the best ways to experience the city on the cheap is by taking the Miami Culinary Tour of South Beach (£45, miamiculinarytours.com) where you can have a little taste of everything from five-star establishments to little holes in the walls on a walking tour. SEE If you only go to one place in Miami, go to Wynwood. Known as the ‘arts district’ (and to me as an Instagrammer’s dream come true), it sure doesn’t disappoint. You’ll be awestruck by the incredible graffiti and murals that bring the neighbourhood to life. Then there’s local artist Ryan, who can give you a guided bike tour (group tours from £14, miamisbestgraffitiguide.com). DO IT. We also ventured on foot to fashion legend Gianni Versace’s villa Casa Casuarina (vmmiamibeach.com) to pay homage, of course. PLAY Ask any local where to go in Miami for a great night of music, drinks and dancing, and they’ll all tell you to hit Ball & Chain (ballandchainmiami.com) in Little Havana. Locals still queue to dance and taste the award-winning mojitos (which are 2-for-1 in happy hour) at this venue, which has played host to musicians such as Billie Holiday. But for true celeb-style glamour, head to the Confidante Hotel on the beachfront for the Backyard Saturdays pool party with free entry and special promos on Prosecco and rosé.
