Thanks Verde Much...

The Cape Verde Islands are a celeb hotspot and the place to get the perfect palm-tree-filled Insta shots, as Look’s Sarah-rose Harrison found out

Surrounded by beautiful clear seas and white sandy beaches, Sal is a total dream. It’s part of a group of 10 islands that make up Cape Verdei off the coast of West Africa. It was originally discovered by the Portuguese and there’s a vibrant mix of Brazilian, African and Portuguese influences, especially within the food and music. With options for everyone, there’s no better place (or time!) to unwind.

STAY Opt for a delish all-inclusive stay at Thomson’s Club Hotel Riu Funana (from £1,022 per person based on two adults sharing, including flights from Gatwick and transfers). Set by the beachfront, you can have your toes in the sea within five minutes of leaving your room. Or pop to the lagoon pool, nestled into a terrace with palms and natural leafy parasols where you can work on your tan, take a break from your summer reading list and cool down at the swim-up bar. After a hard day’s snorkelling, take advantage of the Renova Wellness Spa, which has a range of beauty treatments, a sauna and a (highly Instagramable) whirlpool bath.

EAT With four dining spots to chose from, hit up Espargos, the international buffet with everything you could ever imagine for breakfast, lunch and dinner – think pancakes, tuna steaks and all the asparagus a girl could dream of. With fresh fish and seafood options available daily, sample the fusion of African flavours and Brazilian spice at the Mambana restaurant or mix things up with Asian cuisine at the delish Mandalay restaurant – the tempura shouldn’t be missed. Be sure to book into the new Kulinarum restaurant for a four course treat and a half before popping to watch the evening entertainment.

SEE Take advantage of the trade winds (which blow from November to June) and book a boat trip; you’ll see white sandy beaches, the volcanic peaks of Fogo and, if you’re lucky enough, some natural wildlife. I saw two turtles and approx 101 flying fish! Check out the turtle hatchery based close to the Riu Funana, where (season depending) you can watch little hatchlings making for the waves.

PLAY Borrow a snorkel from the Scuba School and explore the reefs just off the shore. The crystal-clear sea makes spotting fish super-easy. Take a trip to Shark Bay, where you can walk into the sea and see the fins of 6ft Lemon Sharks as they swim in the wild. Thrilling is an understatement!

Postcard-perfect beaches await
