Resounding victory for University

LOUGHBOROUGH UNIVERSITY 5

WINTERTON RANGERS 0 A JOE Boachie hat-trick put Loughborough University on their way to a comprehensive win in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Vase.

It was also their first win of the season which, before this game, had seen them lose seven of the opening eight games in all competitions with just a solitary draw to show for their efforts.

After failing to score in their three previous league games, the Students netted twice inside the first five minutes with Joe Boachie getting both, the first in the opening minute. It was the confidence booster they’d hoped for and although the visitors tried to get back into the game the Uni rearguard stood firm. With five minutes gone Boachie added the second with a fine drive on the turn from about ten yards out and the only surprise in the first half was the Students didn’t add to their advantage.

If Boachie’s opening goal in the first half was swift the one that completed his hat-trick just after the start of the second was even quicker – just 27 seconds were on the clock when he crashed in number three and virtually ended any thoughts of a comeback from the visitors although James Stallan did pull off a fine save soon afterwards.

The Uni were certainly playing their best football of the season and with a lot of confidence and on 70 minutes the impressive Cameron Gordon added a fourth.

It was now a case of how many the Students could get and Ben Last, making his first start of the season got off the mark himself with 10 minutes left to complete the scoring.

This result was just what the Student side needed especially after losing their three previous games by lone goals. They are still a case of ‘work in progress’ with players returning to the campus but new coach Alex Ackerley will surely take heart from this performance.

Boachie is definitely a goal threat and if he gets the sort of service he received in this encounter he’ll add a few more to his tally in the not too distant future. The reward for winning this tie is a home tie with Staveley, also from the Northern Counties league and a chance to put the record straight after the controversial defeat in the FA Cup back in August.

However, before that this weekend sees the Students at home to Highgate United who should provide them with another stern Midland Football League test.
