Book fea­tur­ing the work of A T War­bis pub­lished

A GEM of a book, fea­tur­ing the fas­ci­nat­ing and ex­cel­lent line draw­ings made by lo­cal artist A T War­bis es­pe­cially for the Lough­bor­ough Echo, has just been pub­lished.

The book has been com­piled by well-known lo­cal his­to­rian Bill Wells, on be­half of the Lough­bor­ough Li­brary Lo­cal stud­ies group.

From 1950, for close to 30 years, A T War­bis, who lived in Bar­row-up­onSoar, trav­elled all over the Echo’s circulation area record­ing lo­cal scenes with a se­ries of bril­liant draw­ings. And a se­lec­tion of those draw­ings, along with their orig­i­nal notes are fea­tured in the book, along with present day pho­to­graphs of the scenes.

The reader gets to see just how many of Lough­bor­ough’s views have changed and also how many have not.

A few par­tic­u­lar choice scenes are Bed­ford Square com­plete with ter- raced homes and 1950s cars and the busy in­dus­trial wharf.

The artist’s own bi­og­ra­phy fea­tures in an ex­cel­lent fore­word to the pub­li­ca­tion by Joan Shaw, a vol­un­teer with the lo­cal stud­ies group say­ing: “His legacy is a won­der­ful record of Lough­bor­ough and its sur­round­ing vil­lages dur­ing the mid-20th cen­tury.
