A GEM of a book, featuring the fascinating and excellent line drawings made by local artist A T Warbis especially for the Loughborough Echo, has just been published.

The book has been compiled by well-known local historian Bill Wells, on behalf of the Loughborough Library Local studies group.

From 1950, for close to 30 years, A T Warbis, who lived in Barrow-uponSoar, travelled all over the Echo’s circulation area recording local scenes with a series of brilliant drawings. And a selection of those drawings, along with their original notes are featured in the book, along with present day photographs of the scenes.

The reader gets to see just how many of Loughborough’s views have changed and also how many have not.

A few particular choice scenes are Bedford Square complete with ter- raced homes and 1950s cars and the busy industrial wharf.

The artist’s own biography features in an excellent foreword to the publication by Joan Shaw, a volunteer with the local studies group saying: “His legacy is a wonderful record of Loughborough and its surrounding villages during the mid-20th century.

“From an Artist’s Sketchbook” is priced £7.99 and is available to buy from the Local Studies section of Loughborough Library, Granby Street. Tel 0116 3052420.
