ACCESS to a wildlife area in Loughborough has been greatly improved thanks to a project involving the borough council, a local civil engineering company and other partners.

Charnwood Borough Council has worked with Loughborough-based CR Civil Engineering to make improvements to Dishley Pond, a popular destination in Loughborough for fishing, running and walking.

Footpaths have been widened, constructed and resurfaced so there is now a two-kilometre network which makes the site more accessible for visitors. The work has also been supported by council contractor idverde and volunteers from the Green Gym.

Coun Jenny Bokor, lead member for Loughborough said: “I’ve been for a walk around the site and the new paths have made it easier for visitors to access and enjoy walking or running around the site.

“The support from our contractors, partners and volunteers in the local area has been fantastic; it just shows what can be achieved by having a joined-up approach to initiatives like this one.”

The Council has invested £15,000 in the project so far and CR Civil Engineering has donated £20,000 in manpower and equipment. idverde helped out by clearing hedgerow, and landscaping around the bridges. Green Gym volunteers offered their time by creating and installing new fishing platforms.

Carl Roberts, managing director of CR Civil Engineering said: “We are more than happy to be involved in this project by providing our services to the local community.

“It’s been enjoyable to play a part in the new path construction as local employees at CR Civil Engineering regularly use Dishley Pond’s footpaths for activities such as running and walking their dogs.”

The work has been carried out over the summer and further improvements including extending the new path network are planned for next summer.
