Loughborough Town Ladies hold on to secure victory
LADIES 26 NOVCASTRIAN LADIES 17 LOUGHBOROUGH Town Ladies saw off a spirited fight back from North East side Novocastrian Ladies to finish the first half of the season with a bonus point win.
The visitors had the first chance to get on the scoreboard winning a penalty right in front of the posts in the first minute but the resultant kick went wide of the mark and from then on the game ebbed and flowed as both sides tested each other for the opening score.
On 16 minutes Boro had worked their way upfield with some great phase play and after winning a penalty 10 metres out Loughborough’s ever vigilant scrum half Amy Relf took a quick tap and go to offload to centre Leilah Mills to crash over for the first try with Relf converting to go 7-0 up.
The lead was doubled after 25 minutes when Afkir’s second row partner Cailin Jo Tyler created a turnover on halfway pouncing on the loose ball after spoiling Novocastrians lineout, Relf was once again was quick to react and taking the ball from the back of the ruck sold a delightful dummy pass to step back inside and show a clean pair of heels as she raced away to score and convert for 14-0.
The visitors had the last say when Boro couldn’t deal with a driving maul five meters out to make it 14-5 and a reminder the Newcastle based outfit were still in the game.
Loughborough’s answer was swift indeed, from the restart Prop Aoife Tully forced a knock on and from the resultant scrum came arguably the best try of the game when a move straight of the training ground saw outside centre Mireia García Santiago cut a great line for the newcomer to score her first try on her debut, all after Relf and centre Leilah Mills traded passes to create the opening, Relf’s conversion took the home side to 21-5 after one minute of play.
Any thoughts Loughborough had of taking control of this fixture were short lived, repeated penalties saw Boro back pedalling and Novo’s capitalised to close the gap to 21-10 but a try from Santiago made it 26-10.
A converted try seconds from the end gave the visitors a bonus point but Boro claimed the victory 26-17.
