AFTER winning the inaugural competition last year, Rochdale’s Tom Eccles successfully defended the junior merit tournament at Poynton Sports Club.

He retained the coveted Carter Law Trophy, along with a cheque for £100, which he is pictured receiving from club president Brian Hudson.

Tom, 17, who plays for Bullough Moor Bowling Club in Heywood, said: “The green seems to suit my style of bowling. I’ve been working on my short game, which was my weak point. Now it’s my strength.”

Young bowlers from throughout the North West and Midlands competed for the title in a

carnival atmos- sunny, phere.

Tom beat Jordan McDermott, of Heswall, The Wirral, in the final.

Organiser Ben Holbrook, vice-chairman of Poynton Sports Club’s bowls section, said: “The standard was again superb in fast challenging conditions.”
