Not a long-standing problem
THERE was an imbalanced look to the Moss Rose on Saturday, with two sides of the ground closed.
Home supporters had to relocate, with those in the London Road Stand moving to the McAlpine Stand and the terrace fans joining the Star Lane End gathering. Meanwhile the Braintree supporters were also housed in the McAlpine.
While such closures had been suggested at a recent fans’ forum as a money-saving initiative, the move caused some unrest, particularly among long-standing Silkmen fans.
Stadium manager Dave Towns told the Express that, while sections of the London Road terracing were to have been closed anyway, the closure of the stand was an unforeseen and unavoidable problem.
“The bottom line is that we couldn’t meet the safety certificate requirements as we were a number of stewards short,” he said.
“It was a source of big frustration but it was unexpected and unplanned. The safety officers and stewards managed the situation very well and we do appreciate supporters’ understanding.
“We had to decide at 2pm on a plan of action as we just couldn’t comply with the safety requirements.”
The club are, as ever, looking to recruit stewards. For details call them on 01625 264686.
